Dorking
Caves, South Street, Dorking
Dorking
caves were artificially cut into the soft Greensand, probably over
several hundred years. The caves are open to the public for guided
tours. They are entered through a discreet doorway adjacent to the
War Memorial in South Street. At street level there are extensive
galleries, used until recently as wine cellars. Dorking has been
famous for its wine for several hundred years, and there are many
records of it being stored underground, both locally produced wine
and that which been imported - legally and smuggled. From the wine
cellars a series of shafts lead down deep under Rose Hill to a chamber
of uncertain age and purposed. Domed, with a bench around its circumference,
the chamber is believes to date from the late 17th century. It may
have been excavated as a gentleman's folly, as a meeting place for
religious dissenters, for the local witches coven, or just as somewhere
for the men folk of Dorking to go to quality test the wine. At several
places the galleries and shafts cross cut well shafts from the houses
of Rose Hill.
Public tours of Dorking Caves commence on Sunday 9th March and are
offered on the second Sunday of the month, until and including November.
Full details can be obtained from the Dorking Visitor Information
Centre telephone 01306 879327, where reservations must also be made.
